About Sto SE & Co. KGaA

Sto SE & Co. KGaA (Stühlingen) is a leading international manufacturer of products and systems for coating buildings. Its broad portfolio includes paints, plasters, varnishes, facade insulation systems, materials for concrete repair, floor coatings, acoustic and curtain wall systems. With the help of s-peers AG, the company has merged its planning processes, which were previously created in MS Excel, on the basis of SAP BW: Different planning events and time horizons are now coordinated in a clearly structured process. In addition, the necessary planning results are transferred to the BW-based consolidation system SEM-BCS.

The convincing project result is a fully comprehensive planning process with system-based data collection and consolidation of P&L-related planning in SAP. The system-supported data collection and consolidation sustainably ensures data quality in the face of increasing complexity within the group of companies. The central data pool also reduces redundant data reports and sources of error - along with minimising the group-wide reconciliation effort. From now on, the plan group or individual reporting of the subsidiaries can be created at the push of a button.

The task

Sto SE & Co. KGaA is an international Group which, at the end of 2015, was represented by 41 of its own operating units and their operating facilities in a total of 35 countries. The planning processes were unable to keep pace with the rapid development of the company and were not developed and coordinated to the necessary extent. The various planning processes in the group were therefore still largely detached from each other. In addition, they were connected with intensive manual activities (primarily in Excel workbooks), the results of which were exchanged via file server and e-mail between the involved departments. This approach inevitably contained numerous possible sources of error. An extensive replacement of the Excel-based planning processes plus a coherent integration into the existing group reporting landscape based on SAP BW and SAP SEM-BCS were therefore urgently required.

Requirements

  • Project planning and controlling
  • Ensuring data quality
  • Creation of a central data storage
  • Reduction of multiple data messages (partly also redundant in content), coordination effort and other sources of error
  • Improved transparency in data reporting through the creation of clear process rules and the establishment of system-based data entry options - with the aim of greatly reducing e-mail and Excel reports by the subsidiaries.
  • Mapping of P&L-based planning, i.e..:
    • Turnover planning: Integration of sales
      turnover planning in SEM-BCS planned
    • P&L detail planning:
      - annual value
      - monthly plan breakdown
    • Five-year planning
    • Recording of results with regard to
      Investment and personnel planning
  • Largely automated preparation of the
plan group and plan individual reporting

Solution

  • Create different versions to map the different planning events
    in SEM-BCS
  • Definition of the version-dependent measures plus set-up of the consolidation monitor for mapping the consolidation processes in SEM-BCS
  • Creation of the technical prerequisites for the transfer of planned sales from sales planning into SEM-BCS
  • Create a detailed description of the technical solution
  • Definition and realisation of the workbooks for group and individual reporting

Technologies

  • SAP SEM-BCS
  • SAP BW
  • SAP BW - IP
