The SAP Business Technology Platform

Wiki Business Technology Platform

About the tool

The former SAP Cloud Platform is now called SAP Business Technology Platform. This is a Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), similar to what Amazon offers with AWS and Microsoft with Azure. The services of the platform have been developed on SAP HANA. These services include, for example, SAP Fiori Cloud, SAP JAM Social Collaboration, IoT services for sensor technology and many more.

The SAP Business Technology Platform also serves as a development environment for creating new (mobile) applications. There is one clear advantage here: no money needs to be invested in the company's own hardware infrastructure, and there are no administration and maintenance costs.

What are the benefits of the SAP Business Technology Platform?

Where is my data located when I use it?

The SAP Business Technology Platform is offered by many cloud providers such as SAP, Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Alibaba. All these providers have their hardware distributed in different data centers around the world. The wide distribution serves both failover and performance of data queries. The user can decide for himself where his account is to be hosted and thus where his data is to be stored. It should be noted that the same hardware is not offered in every region, which can have a negative impact on usability.

To find out which regions and services are offered, users can set up a free trial version of the SAP Business Technology Platform in just a few minutes.

How is the development environment structured?

The development environment is based on HANA technology and is therefore ideally suited for application development with SAP UI5 (HTML framework), Java and Node.js (server-side JavaScript). The SAP HANA database itself can also be used and thus enable real-time data processing.

What does the use of the platform cost?

On the one hand, there is the option of purchasing ongoing licences per user, on the other hand, a monthly flat rate can be agreed. The number of users does not matter.

What are the application scenarios?

The areas of application are diverse, and it is excellently suited for the development of customer-specific extensions to SAP systems. Both on-premise and cloud apps can be developed on the platform.

It is particularly practical for the development of apps that access the backend of SAP systems. All developments on the platform can also be very well designed as apps for mobile devices. The joint development and integration of suppliers and customers is also possible without any problems. For special applications such as IoT - apps that process sensor data - the already established services of the platform can be used to enable faster and more stable development.

Since the SAP Business Technology Platform is a PaaS, any infrastructure components can be activated and used at any time if necessary for one's own development.
